A closer look at Timgad
Timgad city is located in the Wilaya of Batna in central Aurès. It was founded by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD as a military and civil colony. It is distinguished by its typical grid layout with straight streets intersecting at right angles. The site contains prominent landmarks such as Trajan's Arch, the theater, and the forum. The city experienced great prosperity before being destroyed in the fifth century AD. Timgad was built to symbolize Roman control over the region. Its architecture highlights advanced Roman techniques in construction and engineering. Excavations have revealed a complex network of baths, markets, and residences. Timgad is a living example of Roman urban planning. It was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1982.
